The Delivery of My Desk

Last week, my desk and chair were delivered. Brad called the store to ask what time things would be delivered, and he was told in the next 15 mintues. When I came home an hour later, there was still no desk. We went out onto our balcony to see if the truck was coming and instead we saw this:

You can clearly see the man carrying my chair on his head. If you look closely on the bottom, the man with the desk can be seen with it on his head. They then walked up 6 flights of stairs to bring the desk to our office.

To get to our apartment, they had to walk at least a half mile down the road, then cross a very busy road. Best delivery I've ever had, hands down.

Perfect moment to be looking out of the window and happen to be taking this picture. Do you tip delivery men there?

I think most Indians in our building (most of whom are professionals), would probably have tipped the guys 20 or 30 rupees each - that would be my guess. 45 rupees = US$1. We tipped them 150 rupees each and it was hard not to feel like we should have given more, but I think it was the right amount given the situation. And yes, I can't believe that we were standing out there watching for them. If we hadn't been so anxious for the desk to come, we'd have never known that they carried it all the way from the store. It is at least a 1/2 mile and on the other side of a busy highway at night. It is also amazing that Elizabeth was able to run inside, find her camera, and get back outside to snap the shot before they were out of view.
